Richard Rothstein - Advancing Racial Equity in America

Publication date:
August, 2018

Richard Rothstein, a Distinguished Fellow of the Economic Policy Institute, gave this presentation on July 17, 2018, as part of a plenary session at United Philanthropy Forum’s 2018 Annual Conference in Boston. In the session, entitled “Advancing Racial Equity in America: Understanding Our Past to Move Forward in Our Future,” Rothstein surfaced the forgotten history of how federal, state and local policy explicitly segregated metropolitan areas nationwide, creating racially homogenous neighborhoods in patterns that violate the Constitution and require remediation, based on his book The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America. He shared the stage for this session with Dr. Elizabeth Hinton from Harvard University and Dr. Ibram X. Kendi from American University.
