Against a backdrop of the “shrinking space” for civil society, philanthropy associations and networks play an increasingly important role in helping their members address societal issues that are complex and publicly and politically sensitive. This session will explore current challenges and lessons by reflecting on experience, based on case studies in Europe and the United States related to philanthropy's role in tackling issues arising from terrorism and migration/immigration. These experiences bring up sensitive issues, including those related to race, equity and inclusion, and can force PSOs and foundations to rethink their role and to consider how they can enhance their effectiveness and impact.
