Organization Overview

Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) is a 501c3 non-profit organization working with a transnational network of grantmakers committed to strengthening Latinx communities across the Americas. HIP connects and convenes funders, nonprofits, researchers, and other leaders to identify emerging needs among Latinx as well as best practices for responsive and effective funding of social change. HIP pioneers new philanthropic models by leading collaborative initiatives and has provided grants and training to help build the capacity of more than 800 organizations and leaders.

Position Summary

The HIP Finance team is the backbone of the organization. The work provided by the Finance team allows our staff and grantees to have the funds and information needed to conduct and support programmatic activities. The Finance team is comprised of the CFO, Finance Manager, and two staff accountants (A/R, and the open A/P role,) and 1 Finance Manager in Mexico. HIP is complex with a $19 million budget in the US and Mexico ($17 million in HIP activities and nearly $2 million in Fiscal Sponsorship activities). HIP has budgeted approximately $7 million in regranting activity, holds approximately $15 million in investments, retains staff in multiple states, and runs a crowdfunding platform ( The activities are diverse and expansive which is great if you enjoy learning new things and being busy! 

We’re looking for a Staff Accountant for Accounts Payable that is skilled in accrual accounting and believes in HIP’s mission and has the patience, follow through, detail and time-management skills to work across teams in the U.S. and Mexico. The ideal candidate will support all areas of A/P, from saving appropriate documentation, entering transactions from check requests, reimbursements, payroll, credit cards, and grant activity to follow up with teams regarding missing compliance documentation such as receipts, contracts, ACH forms, or approvals. This role will also have cross-training in A/R to support the rest of the finance team when needed and will also support HIP’s annual audit activities, and other finance team needs or special projects as requested.

This position will report directly to the Finance Manager in the U.S., and work collaboratively with the CFO and other finance team members. The CFO views this role as a partnership where new ideas for efficiency are always welcomed and encouraged. Given that we’re always looking for ways to improve, an openness to implementing new procedures is a must and a desire to innovate and comfort with change is something we find exciting!

Core Responsibilities

  • Month end close activities to prepare for account reconciliation of company bank accounts;
  • Responsible for general accounting entries, and maintaining schedules for recurring A/P journal entries, payroll entries, credit card entries, in-kind donations, fixed assets and depreciation;
  • Maintain accounting internal controls and related policies and procedures;
  • Tracking, recording payable requests, monitoring and responding to AP questions from staff and vendors, maintaining AP folders, as well as, HIP’s crowdfunding platform (HIPGive), Smartsimple grantmaking software, and EFT billing;
  • Assist with year-end audit and tax reporting procedures;
  • Back up support to assist in preparing investment account entries;
  • Review, investigate, and correct errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports; 
  • Back up support to assist with accounts receivables including, membership invoicing, fellowship invoicing, conference sponsorships, grants, donations, and various payment platforms like Stripe, Paypal, Benevity, Network for Good, Global Giving, Act Blue, Your Cause, and Mexico payment processors like Feenicia, Affipay, Gamecash, etc.; and
  • Responsibilities also include special projects as assigned by the Executive team.


  • Associates Degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience;
  • Three or more years of accounting experience, preferably in not-for-profit with demonstrated track record of assuming increasing role of responsibilities;
  • Proficient in Quickbook desktop accounting software;
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) and have the ability to learn new technology or have prior familiarity with Salesforce, Google Suites, Adobe products, SmartSimple,, Slack,, etc.;
  • Must be able to manage time and resources and perform job duties effectively and efficiently under minimal supervision;
  • Must have well developed communication skills; written and verbal, preferably in English and Spanish;
  • Must be organized and detail oriented (a systems person);
  • Must be able to track and follow through activities to completion, and take responsibility for reminding others to complete their tasks as well to ensure timely reporting and activities;
  • Must be value aligned; and
  • Comfortable working remotely, and in-person when able.

Desired Qualifications

  • Fluent in English and Spanish, preferred;
  • Knowledge and compliance with GAAP for nonprofits; 
  • Knowledge of non-profit tax exempt accounting procedures;
  • Prior experience with on-line payroll systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position requires 7+ hours per day sitting and working from your computer. This is a remote position that can be based anywhere in the United States. Employees are required to comply with health and safety measures consistent with CDC guidelines, and federal, state, and local regulations.
