The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is the only philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LGBTQI human rights around the globe. We support brilliant and brave grantee partners in the U.S. and internationally who challenge oppression and seed change. We work for racial, economic, social, and gender justice because we all deserve to live our lives freely, without fear, and with dignity.

The first grant maker to hundreds of organizations, Astraea plays a catalytic role for LGBTQI groups around the world - particularly those led by lesbian and queer women, trans and gender non-conforming folks, intersex people, and people of color. Our grantmaking, capacity building, media and communications, and philanthropic advocacy programs support their work to challenge oppression and claim rights. A proud public foundation and one of the first women’s funds in the world, Astraea has granted over $46 million to LGBTQI activists and artists in our 43-year history. 

Position Summary

This is a newly created position reporting to the Executive Director. In collaboration with the Executive Team, and within the framework of Astraea’s bylaws, the Director of People and Culture will provide leadership and vision to enliven a culture of inclusion, transparency, and equity at Astraea. This position will ensure the organizational structures reflect the values of the organization and ensure a continuous learning culture within Astraea’s practices, policies, strategic focus, priorities, and general scope of programs. The key focus areas of this role will encompass the following challenges:

  • Embarking in a new direction: The Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice is undergoing a leadership transition and undertaking a new strategic plan. It will be necessary to support Astraea’s new leader(s) in leading transformational change while also learning and adapting to Astraea’s unique culture. 
  • Realigning the organization: Astraea has been preparing for its new future and will be defining new ways of operating to realize its global focus; as well as realize the organization’s commitment to anti-racism and gender justice work. It is envisioned that this position will work with a core Executive leadership team to help achieve the organization’s commitment to operate in a more agile, transparent, cohesive manner and centers Astraea’s employees at the heart of everything it does.
  • Centering Equity and Anti-Oppression in all its forms: Astraea works externally to combat oppression in all forms by embracing intersectional feminism as part of a wider struggle for social justice, recognizing that sexism, transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, and restrictive gender norms harm everyone. Rooting our feminism in social justice, we particularly support Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and Global South movements and leadership. This position will be responsible for guiding the organization in realizing these commitments internally- through our human resources practices and in other ways.

The ideal candidate will live in the greater New York region and be able to travel regularly (at least one to two times a month) to New York City if they are not based in NYC. Candidates who do not live in the NYC metro area but willing to travel based on the needs of the position will also be considered.

Responsibilities

Liaison to the Executive Team

  1. Serves as an active member of the Executive Team.
  2. Acts as a close advisor and thought partner to the Executive Director(s).
  3. Assists in the development of current and long-term organizational cultural-change goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures for Astraea operations. Establishes plans to achieve these goals and implements policies, subject to approval by the Executive Leadership Team.  

Communications

  1. Sets the strategic vision for Astraea’s cultural change and transformative justice work, specifically addressing anti-racism, gender justice and overall anti-oppression efforts in all the organization’s internal operations and external engagement.

Training and Development

  1. Infuses knowledge and best practices related to racial equity and gender justice and other forms of disparities across the organization in all programming, communications, staff development, internal culture-building and business operations.
  2. Develops and executes an internal learning agenda, team building and culture-building activities.
  3. Seeks opportunities to improve and integrate organizational learning into operations.  
  4. Helps build an organizational understanding and affinity for working within a Healing Justice and Transformative Justice framework, centering individual and collective care. 

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree, or commensurate work experience.     
  • 10 plus years of progressively responsible organizational development experience in a nonprofit or foundation.
  • Strong experience in the development of organizational structure and workplace culture initiatives.
  • Outstanding people and project management with a focus on building and supporting cross-functional, collaborative teams.
  • Knowledge of state and federal employment laws.
  • Deep, authentic knowledge with formal training in racial and gender justice and experience applying these equity practices to organizational development and programs.
  • Deep experience in conflict literacy and creating safe spaces where one can bring and share their authentic selves.
  • Demonstrated experience as a communicator.
  • Excellent leadership and writing skills.
  • Deep passion and commitment to honest and candid conversations and self-reflection about racial justice, gender, privilege, social class, power dynamics and Americanism.
  • Knowledge of feminist leadership principles, and comfort working in nontraditional ways.
  • Understanding and acceptance of Astraea’s core values and guiding principles.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when appropriate and legally required. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). 

Preferred

  • Experience working within a social justice environment.
  • Willing to travel nationally and internationally (15%). 
  • Expert facilitation and change management skills. 
  • Experience working within a healing justice and transformative justice framework. 

Compensation

Astraea offers a competitive salary and benefits for this position, including resources for professional development. The starting annual compensation is $140,000 depending on experience. U.S. work authorization is required.
