Ascendium Education Group (formerly Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation & Affiliates), the nation’s largest federal student loan guarantor and a leading post-secondary education and workforce training philanthropy, recently unveiled a new funding strategy that builds on the organization’s existing grantmaking approach and expands its focus to new areas.

Ascendium makes grants to researchers, postsecondary institutions and workforce training providers for initiatives aimed at expanding opportunity for learners from low-income backgrounds so they can better achieve postsecondary educational and career success. The organization’s grantmaking focuses on increasing equity for low-income populations, especially those in historically underrepresented groups: first-generation students, incarcerated adults, rural community members, students of color and veterans.

They are looking for an experienced grantmaker to develop and execute strategies to support specific Ascendium focus areas and lead a team of Program Officers as they develop and manage a portfolio of grants. The Deputy Director will lead and coordinate activities on high profile grants as needed and will collaborate with the Director to achieve Ascendium’s philanthropy priorities and advance team goals. This position is based in Madison, Wisconsin.


  • 7 to 10 years of national grantmaking or nonprofit experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and coordination skills, with demonstrated ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload
