With a view to assisting China in coping with energy challenges, Energy Foundation China’s grantmaking supports policy research, the development of new standards, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and dissemination of best practices across seven programs: clean power, environmental management, industry, low carbon economic growth, low carbon cities, transportation, and strategic communications. Grantees include leading policy research institutes, academies, industry associations, local energy efficiency institutions, and NGOs in China and abroad.

Energy Foundation China seeks a Grants Management Lead, a business partner with a strong systems orientation who thrives in cross-cultural environments to manage & execute all aspects of grantmaking.
Energy Foundation China seeks a Grants Management Lead to be a business partner to the Beijing office’s program and operational staff by managing and executing the tactical and strategic aspects of grantmaking and contracting. This role reports to Energy Foundation China’s Chief Operating Officer and is a member of the Energy Foundation China operations team.
The new Grants Management Lead will have the opportunity to assess the current grants management system (GMS), with support from the U.S.-based Grants Management team and in consultation with the Operations and Program teams at Energy Foundation China. Expected follow-on work would be to identify and recommend a replacement GMS, migrate current grantmaking to the new system, and train and support staff in the use of the new system.
• The Grants Management Lead will facilitate stakeholder engagement across the Energy Foundation China team to design, develop, implement, and integrate grant tracking technologies, workflows, and data management systems, working to optimize the data and systems for reporting and analysis, while being aware of the constraints of applying technological solutions within China, particularly for grantees.
Education and Experience
Energy Foundation China seeks a grants management professional with a deep understanding of grants and contracting policies, systems, and processes that comply with U.S. laws and regulations. Candidates must have a practical understanding of 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and how public charities are regulated in the United States – particularly grant-making and grant-receiving organizations – and be able to adapt these policies into Energy Foundation China’s operations.
Successful candidates will have a proven track record of designing, planning, and implementing process improvement initiatives, along with a collaborative approach to problem-solving and process design. Given the remote nature of the relationships, this individual will need to highly skilled at time management and managing expectations in order to be successful across time zones.
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. Candidates must have a minimum of eight (8) years of grants and contract management experience, either within a grantmaking foundation (preferred) or as a grantee. Strong familiarity with data systems and business processes, especially related to grantmaking, is essential. The ability to conduct business in Mandarin is strongly preferred.
