Publication date:
August, 2018

Dr. Elizabeth Hinton, Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University (@elizabhinton), gave this presentation on July 17, 2018, as part of a plenary session at United Philanthropy Forum’s 2018 Annual Conference in Boston. In the session, entitled “Advancing Racial Equity in America: Understanding Our Past to Move Forward in Our Future,” Dr. Hinton examined the persistence of poverty and racial inequality in the 20th century United States, with a focus on the transformation of domestic social programs, urban policing, and the rise of prisons after the civil rights movement, based in part on her award-winning book From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime: The Making of Mass Incarceration in America. She shared the stage for this session with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi from American University and Richard Rothstein from the Economic Policy Institute.
