This publication highlights reflections from GEO members on the challenges they have experienced and lessons learned while working to transform their organizations.

As the South Grows: Weathering the Storm
National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy and Grantmakers for Southern Progress
The third in a series of reports about opportunities for philanthropy to improve the lives of underserved communities in the South, this report finds that between 2010 and 2014 foundation funding for communities in eastern North Carolina and southern Louisiana neither helped meet the region's environmental challenges nor capitalized on opportunities to support grassroots organizations working to effect long-term structural change. Only 26 percent of the grant dollars allocated to eastern North Carolina and 43 percent in southern Louisiana benefited marginalized communities, while only 4 percent of foundation funding allocated to eastern North Carolina and 8 percent to southern Louisiana supported systemic change strategies such as community organizing, advocacy, or policy change efforts.

Staying Connected: How Five Foundations Understand Those They Seek to Help
The Center for Effective Philanthropy
This report profiles five foundations ranked among the top 15 percent of foundations that commissioned a Grantee Perception Report (GPR) between 2016 and 2017 when it comes to how their grantees rated them on questions related to their understanding of intended beneficiaries’ needs. The work of these five foundations seeks to help beneficiaries in a range of focus areas — from students to children and adults in need of affordable health care. The foundations profiled include: Nord Family Foundation in Amherst, OH; Helios Education Foundation in Phoenix, AZ; the Duke Endowment in Charlotte, NC; the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation in Owing Mills, MD; and SC Ministry Foundation in Cincinnati, OH.
