Are Letters of Inquiry Right for Your Foundation?

Tuesday, April 28, 2015

Jessica Bearman of Project Streamline has a new blog post up on the Grants Managers Network's site concerning Letters of Inquiry (LOI) which provides clear goals for adopting an LOI program along with several strong examples in use by the field.

If your foundation is considering how to streamline its application process by implementing a LOI, Jessica suggests taking a look at your full application and dividing your questions into four buckets:

  • Deal Breakers, such as elligibility
  • Essential, if there's information that provides a clear yes or no on a potential grant, include in it in your LOI
  • Nice to Know, save this info for the full application when you'll be making finer discernments
  • Need for File, that boring information that doens't impact the potential of the grant but you need to have in your records should be saved for the full application

Bearman points to Washington Regional Association of Grantmaker's Common LOI as a one example a foundation might want to follow. For a the full list of sample LOIs and to read Jessica's full post, head on over to the Grants Managers Network blog.
