PSO Advocacy Spotlight: A Data-Informed Dialogue on Foundation Payout Rates

Philanthropy stands at the center of a fundamental struggle – how to use increasing wealth to address inequities in society – especially as the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated those inequities. While we have seen foundations across the country lean in through this crisis to support communities and nonprofit partners, there are calls from policymakers, and some inside our sector, to not only compel philanthropy to do more but require it through new legislation.

The Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) recently partnered with the research team at the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Plante Moran Financial Advisors to update, deepen and expand critical research around the relationship between mandated payout rates and actual foundation distribution rates. Join a conversation exploring the study’s key findings and how the data can help inform your advocacy strategies.
