As of June 18, 22 states have introduced some form of legislation seeking to ban educators from discussing Critical Race Theory and teaching about historical and ongoing racial injustice in the US.

What are the implications of these bills for culturally responsive teaching and learning, whole child equity, and opportunities for young people to access environments that promote their social, emotional and academic development?

How are organizers, educators, and funders coming together to sustain anti-racist education against this well-organized backlash?

Join GTY, the Zinn Education Project and NYU's Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools for an interactive discussion that will explain what is happening, help place this moment in historical context and provide participants with concrete ideas for action.

Richard Gray, Deputy Executive Director, NYU Metro Center

Richard is the Deputy Executive Director at the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools at New York University (Metro Center), where he provides support and strategic assistance to Metro Center’s community organizing/engagement and school transformation programs. Richard is also a Lecturer at Law at Columbia Law School, helping students apply their legal training to advance authentic collaboration between educational institutions and communities.

Jesse Hagopian, Zinn Education Project, @JessedHagopian

Jesse Hagopian teaches history and is the co-adviser to the Black Student Union at Garfield High School — the site of the historic boycott of the MAP test in 2013. Since the fall of 2020, Jesse has been on leave from the classroom to work as a lead organizer with the Zinn Education Project.

Jesse is an editor for the social justice periodical Rethinking Schools, co-editor of Teaching for Black Lives and Black Lives Matter at School, and editor of More Than a Score: The New Uprising Against High-Stakes Testing.

Mary González, Associate Director, Partnership for the Future of Learning; and Texas State Representative for House District 75

Mary González joined the Partnership for the Future of Learning, housed at the National Public Education Support Fund, in July 2020 as Associate Director. Her Doctoral degree is in Curriculum and Instruction- Cultural Studies in Education at UT-Austin. Previously, she has worked at the National Hispanic Institute, the University of Texas at Austin, and as the Assistant Dean for Student Multicultural Affairs at Southwestern University. Mary currently serves as Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for allgo, Texas’ statewide Queer People of Color organization.
