Advancements in the collection, use, and sharing of data has been a boon for foundations. They’ve been able to learn more about themselves and their grantees, assess the accuracy and impact of strategies, and use data to improve upon their work. While digital data hold tremendous promise for how the sector uses and shares their work, it also raises new challenges associated with privacy, security, and responsible use. The more data there is, the more critical these factors become. Lucy Bernholz, senior research scholar at the Stanford University Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society and the Digital Civil Society Lab, and David Roth, Chief Technology Officer at Ford Foundation, join David Goodman, Director of Impact atFluxx, to discuss the state of data security and privacy in philanthropy, including steps for creating a safer and more secure ecosystem for responsible and effective data use and sharing across the sector.
