Housing justice requires the assurance of safe, secure, affordable, and dignified living conditions where people have power and agency over how and where they live. Advancing housing justice, though, requires all of us to take a bold, unapologetic look at the dynamics that perpetuate racial inequity and take the necessary steps to rectify it. Funders Together has an intention to move the philanthropic sector towards investing in power-building and power-sharing, understanding that philanthropy has tools beyond grantmaking to end homelessness and achieve housing justice.
Before we can build, share, and map power, we must understand what power is and the many ways it shows up in our work as individuals and institutions. In this 2-hour, interactive virtual training, Liberation House will guide participants into understanding what power is. We will analyze the power that we have as individuals and institutions and explore hidden types of power, with the goal of building the muscle to critically analyze power in all forms on our path toward housing and racial justice.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training participants will have:
- Knowledge of what power is and the different types of power;
- An analysis of one’s own power over, under, and with; and
- A foundation on which to develop deeper knowledge and skills to map and build power.
This training is part of the learning curriculum for Foundations for Racial Equity (FRE), and we are opening participation to funders outside of FRE. This training is designed to be participatory and interactive, and participants will be expected to share in large and small groups. Use of webcam is highly encouraged, and attendees are encouraged to participate as fully as possible for the duration of the program.
