The Newark Philanthropic Liaison initiative was established in 2007 through an agreement between the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (CNJG) and then Newark Mayor Cory Booker. The non-partisan, grant-funded position spanned Mayoral administrations, with Kevin Callaghan serving in the role since 2016 under Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who took office in 2014. By connecting city leadership to philanthropy and vice versa, convening the funding community to collaborate with each other and strategically support city priorities, and leveraging public and private funds, the position has identified over $75 million since its inception. This panel will feature leaders of the Newark philanthropic community and the Liaison discussing the model, lessons learned, and how this can be replicated in other cities/states.
