For decades, philanthropy-serving organizations (PSOs) have created common grant applications to streamline the grantmaking and grant-seeking processes. Foundations have used common grants to help nonprofits decrease the burdens and costs of fundraising. However, with the advent of online applications, the use of common applications has waned. Can the common grant be revived? Almost 40% of application questions are duplicative across funders. But diverse grant formats and applications are putting a strain on grant partners. Today, there is growing interest in developing a more uniform and agreed-upon format for applications.
